Buffalo Bison
14 June 2011

Can someone explain to me this joke (Relation to Bison.Buffalo)?
What’s the difference between a bison and a buffalo??
You can’t wash your hands in a buffalo
If you say it with enough of a southern accent, bison sounds like basin, so you can wash your hands in a basin, but not in a buffalo.

American Bison $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The American Bison (Bison bison) is a North American species of bison, also commonly known as the American Buffalo. Buffalo is somewhat of a misnomer for this animal, as it is only distantly related to either of the two true buffaloes, the Asian Water Buffalo and the African Buffalo. However, bison is a Greek word meaning oxlike animal, while buffalo originated with the French fur trappers who called these massive beasts boeufs, meaning ox or bullock so both names, bison and buffalo, have a similar meaning. In reference to this animal, the term buffalo, which dates to 1635, has a much longer history than the term bison, which was first recorded in 1774. The American Bison is more closely related to the Wisent or European Bison. These bison once inhabited the grasslands of North America in massive herds; their range roughly formed a triangle between the Great Bear Lake in Canadas far northwest, south to the Mexican states of Durango and Nuevo Len, and east along the western boundary of the Appalachian Mountains. The two subspecies include the Plains Bison (Bison bison bison), smaller in size and with a more rounded hump, and the Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae), which is the larger of the two and with a taller, square hump. Wood Bison is one of the largest species of cattle in the world, surpassed only by the Asian gaur and Wild Asian Water Buffalo. It is the largest extant land animal in North America. Vore Buffalo Jump $82.85 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Vore Buffalo Jump is an archeological site in Crook County, Wyoming. A sinkhole, formed where gypsum soil was eroded, leaving a steepsided pit about 40 feet (12 m) deep and 200 feet (61 m) in diameter. Native American hunters could stampede bison in the direction of the pit, which was deep enough to kill or disable the animals that were driven into it. The location is one of a number of buffalo jump sites in the north cetral United States and southern Canada. The Vore site was used as a kill site and butchering site from about 1300 AD to about 1700 AD. Archeological investigations in the 1970s uncovered bones and projectile points to a depth of 15 feet (4.6 m). About ten tons of bones were removed from the site. Adobe Walls $44.62 In the spring of 1874 a handful of men and one woman set out for the Texas Panhandle to seek their fortunes in the great buffalo hunt. They intended to establish a trading post to serve the hunters, or hide men, and at a place called Adobe Walls they dug blocks from the sod and built their center of operations. After only a few months, angry members of several Plains Indian tribes, whose survival depended on the rapidly shrinking bison herd, attacked the post. Initially defeated, the attacking Indians retreated. But the defenders also retreated, and intent on erasing all traces of the white man’s presence, the Indians burned the deserted post. Nonetheless, tracings did remain, and in the ashes were buried minute details of the hide men’s lives.Adobe Walls tells us much about the dying of the Plains Indian culture and the march of white commerce across the frontier. |

Buffalo Days $18.64 Because he has been criticized as a destroyer, a ruthless killer, and wastrel of a great game resource of a Nation, the buffalo hunter appeals to the bar of history for his vindication… Within four years we opened up a vast empire to settlement, and put the Indians forever out of Texas. J. Wright Mooar tells the story of the buffalo hunter, from the hunter’s perspective, in this first-person account published more than seventy years ago in several installments in Holland’s, The Magazine of the South. Mooar was more than eighty years old when he sat down with Methodist minister/educator James Winford Hunt and recounted his years as a buffalo hunter. He describes how buffalo hunting became a huge business that thrived for less than a decade in the 1870s and makes the case that the buffalo hunter, more than anyone else, opened the way for white settlement by eradicating the Indians’ source of food. Buffalo hunting was a business and not a sport. It required capital, management, and a lot of hard work. Magazine writers and others who claim that the killing of the buffalo was a national calamity and was accomplished by vandals simply expose their ignorance, and I resent such an unjust judgment upon us. If it had not been for the work of the buffalo hunters, the wild bison would still graze where Amarillo now is, and the red man would still reign supreme over the pampas of the Panhandle of Texas. Any one of the families killed and homes destroyed by the Indians would have been worth more to Texas and to civilization than all the millions of buffalo that ever roamed from the Pecos River on the south to the Platte River on the north. Illustrated by Texas folklore artist Granville Bruce, the stories of J. Wright Mooar make for lively reading and continuing debate. Here is an odyssey of hairbreadth escapes from death with wild Indians, wilder white men, and thundering herds of wild buffalo, writes J.W. Hunt, founding president of Abilene’s McMurry College (now Unive |

Buffalo Nation: American Indian Efforts to Restore the Bison $19.95 The gruesome story of the devastation of buffalo herds in the late nineteenth century has become uncomfortably familiar. A less familiar story, but a hopeful one for the future, is Ken Zontek s account of Native peoples efforts to repopulate the Plains with a healthy, viable bison population. Interspersing scientific hypothesis with Native oral traditions and interviews, Buffalo Nation provides a brief history of bison and human interaction from the Paleolithic era to present preservation efforts. Zontek s history of bison restoration efforts is also a history of North American Native peoples pursuit of political and cultural autonomy, revealing how Native peoples ability to help the bison has fluctuated with their overall struggle. Beginning in the 1870s, Native North Americans established captive bison breeding programs despite the Wounded Knee Massacre and a massive onslaught on Native cultural and religious practices. These preservation efforts were so successful that a significant percentage of bison today carry the bloodlines of these original Native-sponsored herds. At the end of the twentieth century, more than fifty tribes banded together to form the Intertribal Bison Cooperative. This group has made significant progress in restoring bison herds in the United States, while Canadian First Nations work with national parks and other government entities to select and manage free-ranging herds. Buffalo Nation offers insights into the ways that the Native North American effort to restore the buffalo nation inspires discourse in cultural perseverance, environmentalism, politics, regionalism, spirituality, and the very essenceof human-animal interaction. |

Buffalo Nation: History and Legend of the North American Bison $209.39 The U.S. Government and its Army killed millions of buffalo as part of an all-out war against the Native Americans in the nineteenth century. The plains Indians, who relied on the buffalo as a source of food and spiritual power, weakened and succumbed to the aggressors as the buffalo quickly disappeared from the prairies. Buffalo Nation tells the story of this brutal war, and details the amazing comeback of the buffalo. The number of bison in the U.S. plummeted from more than thirty million in the early 1800s to fewer than 500 at the turn of the century. There are now more than 250,000 bison on ranches and sanctuaries across the nation. Valerius Geist also examines the natural history of the buffalo–underscoring its importance in North America in this enlightening exploration that will appeal to history buffs, conservationists, wildlife enthusiasts, and those concerned with Native American issues. The book features writings by Buffalo Bill Cody, Mari Sandoz, George Catlin, Black Elk, Lewis and Clark, General George Custer, Chief Plenty-coups, John James Audubon, Daniel Boone, Francis Parkman, and more. Illustrations include those by Charles M. Russell, Albert Bierstadt, George Catlin, and various Native American artists, along with more than 80 historical and contemporary photographs. |

Dick in the Desert $38.91 1893. The story begins: Between Fox Peak and Smoke Creek Desert, on the western edge of the State of Nevada, is a beautiful valley, carpeted with bunch grass, which looks particularly bright and green to the venturesome traveler who has just crossed either of the two deserts lying toward the east. Buffalo Meadows the Indians named it, because of the vast herds of American bison found there before the white men hunted simply for the sport of killing; but those who halt at the last watercourse prior to crossing the wide stretches of sand on the journey east, speak of it as Comfort Hollow. Driving Across Kansas $12.95 In his introduction to Dan Dancer’s The Four Seasons of Kansas, bestselling author William Least Heat-Moon reflects upon the Great Kansas Passage of those who race their cars westward across Interstate 70 without trying to understand the truth of the place. Ted Cable and Wayne Maley come to the rescue of those bored and blinkered speed-driven travelers with a new guide that will expand and enrich their understanding of a state whose history, in Heat-Moon’s words, is a tumbling of guns, torches, hatchets, and knives. Guided by Cable and Maley, the historical landscapes of I-70 come back to life, recalling landmarks and legacies relating to pioneer movements and Indian dispossession, army outposts and great bison hunts, cowboys and cattle trails, the struggles over slavery and women’s rights, and the emergence of major wheat, beef, oil, and water industries. Their guide parcels out information, mile-marker by mile-marker, in a way that’s equally accessible to westbound and eastbound users alike. For example: 85 Grinnell – In 1872, Grinnell had two large sod buildings for drying buffalo meat. The air was so dry here that meat could be stripped off in layers and hung to dry. The dried meat would be preserved and not spoil. This was critical in the days before coolers and refrigerators. People called this meat jerked meat because of the way it was torn from the buffalo’s carcass. Today at gas stations or convenience stores along I-70 you have the opportunity to buy similar jerked meat in the form of beef jerky. 117 Capturing an Iron Horse – In this area, along the railroad track paralleling I-70 to the north, Indians tried in 1868 to capture a locomotive alive by taking telegraphwire, doubling it back and forth several times, and stretching it across the track with an Indian or two holding each end. Needless to say, the iron horse running at full steam, tore through the snare like a rampaging buffalo through a spider web. 298 Fort Riley – Ft. Riley’s cavalry sc |

Hemphill County $21.99 From Spanish conquistadores and American Indian battles to railroads and oil booms, Hemphill County has seen it all. Located in the northeast Panhandle, Hemphill County is a land of sage-covered sand hills and rolling breaks, with towering buttes and deep canyons cut by the Canadian River. Once inhabited by the ancient mammoth and mastodon and, more recently, thundering herds of bison, Hemphill County has a rich human history too. It was home to the Kiowa, Comanche, and Cheyenne Indians and was crossed by Coronado’’s famous expedition in 1540. American Indian fights, such as the Battle of Buffalo Wallow, also occurred here. Canadian, the county seat, has a unique history of its own. This oasis located on the banks of the Canadian River was the site of the first rodeo in Texas and a stop on the Santa Fe Railway. Other commerce soon followed, including a successful ranching and farming culture, as well as many thriving oil and natural gas industries. |

Stories of the Sioux $3.03 Luther Standing Bear, a Lakota Sioux born in the 1860s, heard these legends in his youth, when his people were being moved to reservations. Haunting in mood and imagery, they celebrate the old nomadic life of the Sioux when buffalo were plentiful and all nature fed the spirit. The twenty stories honor not only the buffalo but also the dog, horse, eagle, and wolf as workaday helpers and agents of divine intervention; the wisdom of the medicine man; and the heroism and resourcefulness of individual men and women. Luther Standing Bear is the author of Land of the Spotted Eagle, My People the Sioux, and My Indian Boyhood (also Bison Books). |

The Callings $29.24 Bison herds are dwindling on the Kansas prairie. Logan Fletcher, a young faith healer from Kentucky, labors as a skinner on a buffalo hunting crew, waiting for the taming of the plains and the chance to spread the Word to the coming immigrants. On the reservation near Fort Sill, the U.S. government withholds food in retaliation for Comanche and Kiowa depredation in Texas. Cuts Something, an aging Comanche war chief, returns to his old home on the Pease River to revive his badger medicine. His quest is rewarded, and he leads his demoralized band back to the bison-rich Texas Panhandle.Logan’s crew abandons the Kansas bone field and heads into the Panhandle, where the brutal plains life erodes his idealism and raises questions he is ill prepared to answer. The inevitable confrontation of two men — each from an arrogant, expansionist culture — draws in an assortment of characters cast of the harsh land itself and just as gripping: Bob Durham, the former slave, whose skill as a plainsman saves Logan’s crew time and again; Ezra Higginbotham, the hunter whose determination to exploit the last of the southern bison herd imperils everyone around him; Elizabeth Keltner, the young woman who survives cholera and capture by Kiowas, then gives Logan reason to live; and Abraham, the giant Tonkawa scout who eats the flesh of his enemies and endures unspeakable torture to lead the army to Cuts Something’s band. The final clash tests the depths of Cuts Something’s resolve and compels Logan to confront the racism, brutality, and moral paradox of the American frontier in all its complexities. |
